چکیده

A path in an edge-colored graph G is rainbow if no two edges of it are colored the same. The graph G is rainbow-connected if there is a rainbow path between every pair of vertices. If there is a rainbow shortest path between every pair of vertices, the graph G is strongly rainbow-connected. The minimum number of colors needed to make G rainbow-connected is known as the rainbow connection number of G, and is denoted by rc(G). Similarly, the minimum number of colors needed to make G strongly rainbow-connected is known as the strong rainbow connection number of G, and is denoted by src(G). We prove that for every k ≥ 3, deciding whether src(G) ≤ k is NP-complete for split graphs, which form a subclass of chordal graphs. Furthermore, there exists no polynomial-time algorithm for approximating the strong rainbow connection number of an n-vertex split graph with a factor of n1/2− for any > 0 unless P = NP. We then turn our attention to block graphs, which also form a subclass of chordal graphs. We determine the strong rainbow connection number of block graphs, and show it can be computed in linear time. Finally, we provide a polynomial-time characterization of bridgeless block graphs with rainbow connection number at most 4.

On the Complexity of Rainbow Coloring Problems

An edge-colored graph G is said to be rainbow connected if between each pair of vertices there exists a path which uses each color at most once. The rainbow connection number, denoted by rc(G), is the minimum number of colors needed to make G rainbow connected. Along with its variants, which consider vertex colorings and/or so-called strong colorings, the rainbow connection number has been stud...

Complete Bipartite Graphs with No Rainbow Paths

Motivated by questions in Ramsey theory, Thomason and Wagner described the edge colorings of complete graphs that contain no rainbow path Pt of order t. In this paper, we consider the edge colorings of complete bipartite graphs that contain no rainbow path Pt. Mathematics Subject Classification: 05C15, 05C38, 05C55

Vertex rainbow colorings of graphs

In a properly vertex-colored graphG, a path P is a rainbow path if no two vertices of P have the same color, except possibly the two end-vertices of P . If every two vertices of G are connected by a rainbow path, then G is vertex rainbow-connected. A proper vertex coloring of a connected graph G that results in a vertex rainbow-connected graph is a vertex rainbow coloring ofG. The minimum numbe...

Local Rainbow Colorings

Given a graph H, we denote by C(n,H) the minimum number k such that following holds: There are n colorings of E(Kn) with k-colors, each associated with one of the vertices of Kn, such that for every copy T of H in Kn, at least one of the colorings that are associated with V (T ) assigns distinct colors to all the edges of E(T ). We characterize the set of all graphs H for which C(n,H) is bounde...

On Rainbow Trees and Cycles

We derive sufficient conditions for the existence of rainbow cycles of all lengths in edge colourings of complete graphs. We also consider rainbow colorings of a certain class of trees.
